Breastfeeding and your family

Black Moms Nurse, Too!

Considering that breastfeeding is not really the "American" thing to do, the formula industry is a mutil-Billion dollar empire, and African American women (especially lower-income families) are not enthusiastic or knowledgeable about breastfeeding, it seems as though there may be no support at all for us AA women who really (really) want to breastfeed. Add to that the idea of nursing past six months and you're pretty much on your own.

The best way to get support from family is to fill them in on the benefits of breastfeeding and extended (past 6-8 months) breastfeeding. When asked her opinion on extended nursing, Former Surgeon General Dr. Antonia Novello, replied, "Lucky, I feel, is the child who is breastfed for at least two years." You need your family's support! Show them this newsletter! Point them in the direction of the many, many websites devoted to promotion of breastfeeding! However if you find that you still have no support, go online and find a support group of women who are in a similar position. That's also what The Breastfeeding Sista Circle was created for. We're here to be your online family - to give you the support you deserve!

It is very hard to be successful at breastfeeding without the support of your closest family members, especially your husband or significant other. If you find that you are met with serious opposition to your deep desire to breastfeed even after providing good sources of information and education, I suggest you forge ahead - alone. You know what's best for your baby!
